Winchester 7: I've always wanted to write a travel song and, as luck would have it, I found myself scheduled to take an overseas journey during which I was to traverse four cities in three countries over four days.
I imagined that it would be a blues rock styled tune; but then again, I usually do. I ended up developing an upbeat chord progression and thought that it might well serve the purpose. So, I took the opportunity to record what would become the rhythm ukulele track in advance of the trip.
While enroute, aboard plane or train, in airport lounges and solitary hotel rooms; I listened to the track and worked to write the lyrics while drawing on my experiences along the way. I also added in some of my more notable recollections from prior visits such as the Manchester couple who had woken me up fighting after a charity gala.
Things that didn't make the final cut included a Manchester kitchen fire triggered evacuation from twenty floors up (in fact, the same prior visit as the gala episode), poor Amsterdam tourist cycling, and a quip about lost luggage. Thankfully, Jack got me to also cut out a bit about chicken tandoori.
Still, while I had a melody in mind, I couldn't think of a good chorus that linked it all together and took the problem to my wife (cherry cheesecake). I explained that I wanted to do something about looking forward to coming home, but felt that the idea had been a little overdone. She suggested that the song be dedicated to our English Labrador retriever, Lucy.

would be Winchester 7 (vocals, ukulele). Out of Atlanta, Georgia-based, Sanctuary Studio; though runners, Voorhees now resides in Amsterdam and Kane is itinerant within the UK; the trio deliver their unique blend of indie rock with alternative, classic, and surf influences....more
