Winchester 7: Last year we recorded a song called, "Everything's OK". Since, it's been a bit of a joke around my house that it was the closest to a love song that I had done.
So, I set out to do better; but, as I noodled about an A-chord accented by pull-offs, the song started getting faster. Just the same, I was still certain that I was on my way to having a ballad. I suppose that I still thought so, even as I added a bunch of distortion to my uke. Even when I decided to add a wah'd slide uke solo, I recall that I continued to believe I hadn't entirely departed from my goal.
Now, around the time that this was being recorded, my wife had bought me a portable record player for Christmas. To test it out, I went up to the remains of my record collection and found an old Star Trek record that I still had from when I was a kid.
I remember how after first hearing the Beastie Boys, I had tried to take that Star Trek record and scratch it on my record player. So, the first thing that occurred to me to do with my new record player was the very same, very many years later.
I sent the record player's output into my mixer and captured an extended play from which I pulled clips and looked to mix them into the song, which I had determined would be done in multiple parts.
In the end, the coda, is about what remains of my original ballad effort though we're still pleased with the result.
Some other possible points of interest include:
- "cheesecake" is a pet name for my wife from when we first met.
- concerning the first verse, while "she comes back to me" is intended to sound romantic, it is also a play on that my wife frequently leaves to run errands and quickly comes back for something she has forgotten
- my wife likes mysteries, the board game Clue, and Scooby Doo...a lot
